Concept: Bengal Art School Movement
Project Brief: Choose a major event in history and portray the historical transition period in the form of a hand-drawn Poster. Further, convert the Original Poster into 5 recent Graphic Design Trends in the field.
Overview: I chose the Bengal Art School Movement (1896) to study more about major revolutions in the Indian subcontinent.
During the British Rule (1858-1947), European paintings were taught in art schools. Indian Painting styles had fallen out of popularity. To revive the fading Indian style & culture and create a sense of unity & patriotism among the local artists and eventually the masses. Early 20th century, Indian Nationalist Leaders promoted the concept of Swadeshi and hence, the Bengal Art School Movement took pace.

Neo-Futurism
This ongoing trend gives a modern and technical spin to the original poster. This targets the modern and future gen - viewers in the form of a digital archive.

Retro
This nostalgia-feuled trend celebrates the bright colors of the trend as well as the Bengal school paintings' organic colors.

Y2K
This ongoing trend gives a modern and technical spin to the original poster. This targets the modern and future gen - viewers in the form of a digital archive.
One of the major challenges in this project was to retain the layout and essence of the original poster and converting it into another trend with highlighting the main features of that trend.

Street-side Notice Poster
The concept of this hand-painted poster aims to resemble the LOST and FOUND Notice for the viewer or passerby to give them a quick glimpse of the movement and the contributing artists. The center painting is done using watercolors inspired from the paintings of Jamini Roy. While the Typography (Typeface- Baskerville) is to relate to the early 20th century era.

Punk - Revival
Tracing the origins of this movement which was ignited with the rebel against the European teaching methods and uniting the local artists under the umbrella of the lost Indian art style, this poster fits into the Punk revival theme.

Risoprint
This poster is a digital version of the risoprint which is manually done. I tried to capture the color overlap and the displaced registration of the elements as done in the original risoprint trend.

This project was fun overall to conceptualise around a historical event, plan the layout, highlight the details tailored to the event, observe & and study various trends in the Graphic field and explore the possibilities of the flexibility of the layout into other trends.
